Singapore’s neighbourhoods have always been a key focus for the country’s leaders. Our current Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam spoke about the importance of neighbourhoods in promoting social inclusion and mobility in 2015 1. He emphasized that the composition and design of neighbourhoods play a crucial role in maximizing interaction and achieving an integrated society. The culture of neighbourhoods matters, and it doesn’t come about by accident. It’s walking the corridors and taking the same elevators as your neighbours every day; it’s the way the kids grow up together in the playgrounds and in the primary school nearby; it’s about the peers in the neighbourhood 1.

The government of Singapore has taken several measures to ensure that neighbourhoods are inclusive and promote social cohesion. One such measure is the three-generation (3G) public housing, which encourages multi-generations to live together 2. The government has also implemented policies such as housing race quotas, upgrading, education policies, and urban planning to make Singapore’s multicultural society work 1.

The Go Green community event held at Chai Chee Avenue is a testament to Singapore’s commitment to sustainability and green living. The event showcased the innovative sustainability ideas of the youth from St. Stephen school and Tao Nan School. It was a reminder that every small effort contributes to a greener and healthier world.
